BINDRUNES

Bindrunes are runic symbols that consist of two or more runes. Bindrunes were used from 800 A.D., mostly on tombstones and monuments, usually to save space. In Iceland, they were used to mark cattle, driftwood, and relics until the latter half of the 19th century. Special magic symbols developed from bindrunes at the same time that using runes in conventional writing was lost. Bindrunes were also used as mysterious symbols. They were thought to have magical powers and whoever wrote the bindrune was often the only one who knew it’s meaning, seeing as it wasn’t easy to read unless you knew the story behind it. Bindrunes were often used to make magic with the goal of increasing one’s luck, happiness or prosperity. Bindrunes were also used to protect against evil intentions, as it says in Egla and other ancient scripts.

There are many ways to construct a bindrune. The creation of a bindrune depends entirely on whoever is writing it; the meaning is completely in the writer’s hands. A bindrune can, for instance, contain the initials of a name or even an entire sentence. The content of a bindrune is the runes themselves. You can use the same shapes from the runic alphabet as many times as you’d like, but aesthetically, simplicity is usually the best choice. A great deal of mystery always follows the bindrunes, seeing as how difficult it is to decipher their meaning, and so the symbol in itself becomes very mysterious. When a bindrune is created it’s good to keep in mind what the meaning of the bindrune should be and what it should stand for. Should it symbolise a name or should it be a logo or a marking for an object? The bindrune can even contain a coded message, an entire sentence or a poem that is meaningful to whoever creates the bindrune. When the meaning of the bindrune has been determined, you need to take a good look at the runic alphabet and look for the symbols and shapes required to make up the bindrune. The runic alphabet consist of repeated shapes and one therefore doesn’t have to repeat them anymore than one feels like. Finally, it’s good to try out more than one version of the bindrune to find the symbol you like the best. You can make the rune as tall as regular runic symbols or even horizontal or vertical. This is where the creator of the bindrune has to choose the path he likes the most. On the next page, you can find examples of how to construct a bindrune from the initials of a name in a simple way.

One of the most recognised form of a bindrune in our time is the logo for the communications company, Bluetooth. Their logo is a bindrune combined of the rune H H (Hagall) and B B (Bjarkan) that symbolise the initials of the name Harald Blåtand. He was the king of Denmark and later also ruled over a part of Norway in the 10th century A.D.. He is mostly remembered for encouraging people to take up Christianity in Denmark. The Bluetooth-technology is named after him.

You can use bindrunes in practical ways in your daily life. Here are a few examples of how you can use bindrunes: Logos, seals, stamp,a symbol for someone’s name, tattoo, jewellery, engravings on wedding bands, patterns on fabric or clothing, marking on a phone case, markings on nametags and as coded messages.
